A region of valleys, rivers, gorges, lakes, a land of water and stone warming under beautiful sunshine from an endless azure blue sky.

The Department of Tarn offers both the resident and the holiday maker an endless array of activities for every generation, from gentle pursuits such as fishing in the many rivers and lakes in the area, to rambling through the wonderful gorges and valleys discovering the hidden beauty of the medieval bastide towns that populate this department.

The area itself has a full programme of events for much of the year, but that pick up a pace in the late spring with festivals and fetes in most towns and villages.

For more active visitors there are opportunities to experience cycling, climbing, caving pot-holing and racing through foaming white water in canoes or rafts. For children the open countryside and the smaller rivers and lakes provide a natural playground of excitement and adventure.

For your home or holiday in unspoilt South West France the Tarn offers something for everyone.

Fishing

Fishing permits are rather complicated but that's up to us to arrange and prices range from about £35 to £50 depending on when, where and what you want to fish for. The Tarn, The Lot, The Garonne, The Aveyron, The Bonnette, The Livron, The Viaur And many smaller rivers including the nearby Cerou.

There are numerous fish:

Pike (Brochets), Perch, Carp, Bass, Trout, Pikeperch (Sandres), plus an abundance of other river and lake fish.

Water sports.

From pedaloes and gentle family picnics by small boat or open canoe to white water rafting and slalom kayaking, the rivers Lot, Tarn and Aveyron have something for everyone. Key centres for organised kayaking include, Albi, Najac and St Antonin Nobel Val too.

Lake swimming and a beautiful beach can be found nearby too at the Lac de Roucarie

The Midi-Pyrénées Leisure and Adventure Park, "Cap’ Découverte" is an amazing space. Whether you love adrenaline or are looking to find new forms of excitement, there are many sports and leisure activities on offer in 618 acres of nature: Skate Park, Giant Zip Wire, Cable Waterskiing, Paintball, and more!

It is located a one-hour drive from Toulouse, but only ten minutes from Albi, at Le Garric - near Carmaux.

The charming River Tarn flows through some of the most picturesque country side in France, with majestic scenery interspersed with beautiful towns and villages.

The River Aveyron is the fisherman's river full of a huge variety of fish but is also suitable for short holiday canoe trips in open top plastic kayaks….fun for all the family….take a picnic and enjoy the peace and quiet of this beautiful river, or white water Kayak at Najac.

Climbing

With its steep gorges and towering cliffs there are climbs in abundance for the experienced and not so experienced. Located 25 kilometres from Cordes near Saint Antonin Noble Val there are two climbing schools and numerous other fantastic opportunities for those wishing to scale the heights of this beautiful region.

Walking and Hiking in and Around Cordes

The region of Cordes provides a range of walking trails as another way to discover this beautiful region, its hills and valleys, plateaux, flora, pigeonniers, etc.. Using the hiking trails which passes through Cordes, you can enjoy our beautiful region.

Various hiking guides are available for sale at the Cordes tourist office. Most of these circuits are also accessible for mountain bikes and on horseback.

The tourist office also offers a driving tour (2:00 hours, 28 km) of discovery of features of the local region (including pigeonniers, churches, etc ).

Penne du Tarn to Cordes sur Ciel

A route thatprovides the opportunity to travel through many historic villages: Penne with its castle perched high on a rocky outcrop; Vaour, with its dolmen – once the, headquarters of the Knights Templars and Hospitallers; Roussayrolles with its holy well “The Mother God” and the Roquereine castle near Marnaves dominating the Cordes countryside, and finally Cordes sur Ciel.

A combination of nature and culture is always guaranteed!

Travel the Tarn from North to South

From Saint Martin Laguépie to Montredon-Labessonnié, the route covers an incredible variety of regional landscapes : from the white cliffs of the Causses, northwest of Cordes, passing the medieval villages of the Cérou Valley, on to the Tarn Valley and the green heart of the Midi in the Monts d’Alban, every step offers great experiences !
